5 Tips to Spot Fraudsters
Watch out for SMS and emails that try to get you to click on links that spread malicious software.
But how can we tell the difference between fake SMS and emails amidst the flood of messages we receive? Fraud can also happen over the phone – is the friendly woman calling from a Norwegian phone number telling the truth?
Here are 5 tips:
Trust, fear, and temptation are the fraudsters’ tools. Be especially cautious of messages that play on these emotions, whether they come via email, SMS, or phone.
Fraud attempts are often characterized by a rush – the scammer wants you to do something quickly. If you receive such a message – take a break, read it again, and check through another channel to verify the message is legitimate.
No legitimate service (like Netflix, the Tax Administration, or your bank) will send you a link asking you to click it to access your profile. Never use such links. Always go directly to their website to log in to your account.
Be wary of anyone asking for your card details or personal information in exchange for something else, like a new phone, concert tickets, or cash.
If you suspect the email you’ve received is fake, check that the sender’s email address is spelled correctly. Hover your mouse over any links in the email to check their destination. Does it look okay? Another sign of a fake email is mass mailings that start with "Dear Customer" or similar.
