The Population Register sends information about deaths to the bank every month. Deposit accounts are frozen, account administrators are removed, and mobile app, BankID, and cards for the deceased are blocked. Therefore, itโs important to have a good plan before this is blocked.
What happens to the bank account relationship after a death?
All account administrators are removed.
Withdrawals and transfers from accounts are not possible, even if you previously had access to the accounts.
It is still possible to make payments into the deceased's accounts.
Online banking and BankID are personal and will be deleted.
All regular payments will be stopped.
All cards will be blocked.
Accounts remain open for incoming payments like salary, pension, or benefits.
Fixed payment agreements are stopped and deleted. Vendors will usually send paper invoices instead. This is often easier for the relatives to manage.
Fixed payments for mortgage loans in Sparebanken Norge will continue until the property is transferred or sold.
Bill payment
You can contact us to have the following bills paid before the probate certificate is ready:
Regular household bills such as electricity, phone, loans, rent, and public fees.
Funeral costs.
Any remaining taxes.
What do we need to close the account of the deceased?
If you wish to close the account, you must send us a certified copy of the probate certificate by post. We also need a power of attorney form from all heirs after death, which you can find here.
A copy of valid identification for all heirs. All copies must be marked "certified true copy" โ this can be done by the district court, police, courts, other municipal and state authorities, financial institutions, auditors, accountants, and lawyers.
A signed letter requesting the closure of the deceased's accounts and funds, along with the account number where the money should be transferred. You are responsible for distributing the funds to the heirs.
You do not need to send the deceased's bank cards or credit cards to us, but please cut them up.
